A Simple, Natural Outlet for Dogs to be Dogs

The first time I saw a coffee wood chew tucked into a basket at our local pet store, I remember thinking, ‘coffee wood? Why on earth would we give caffeine to dogs?’

Once I learned the wood itself is caffeine-free, I brought one home for six-month-old Pine, and it quickly became one of our favorite discoveries.

Chewing is deeply instinctual for dogs. It can help them settle, soothe, relieve boredom, and simply gives them a satisfying outlet to chew. I wanted something natural that could meet that need without another plastic toy or something edible every time he wanted to chew. Nearly a year and a half later, Pine still reaches for his coffee wood every day.

I loved the story behind it, too. Coffee trees in Vietnam are routinely pruned and eventually replaced as part of their agricultural life cycle, allowing the wood to be given another purpose. Something grown by the earth gets another chapter.

But natural doesn’t mean I stop asking questions. Before putting the Tailswell name behind an agricultural product that would spend hours in my dog’s mouth, I had our coffee wood independently tested for mold, mycotoxins, pesticides, insecticides, heavy metals, and other potential contaminants. The clean findings gave me the confidence to keep giving it to Pine and finally share it with all of you.
